Handle setbacks and scope changes early
Course overview · 4 min reading + 12 min practice, estimated
Principles and method
A search may face weak response, a withdrawn finalist, a changed brief or delayed approval. Identify the cause before increasing activity. Communicate the impact and options promptly without assigning blame. Distinguish an execution problem from a market or client dependency. A scope change should update the plan, commitments and relevant candidate information. Do not continue presenting an obsolete timeline to preserve appearances. Escalation should help the accountable person make a decision, with evidence and a recommended next step.
Worked example
A finalist withdraws because travel expectations changed. The team checks earlier communication, updates the brief and reconfirms interest with remaining candidates rather than treating the event as unpredictable bad luck.
Put it into practice
Draft an escalation note for a fictional search that is two weeks behind its original plan.
Use fictional information and keep your work in your own notes.
Compare your approach: self-review guidance
State verified causes, affected commitments and options. Include what you can control and what requires client action. Propose a revised plan with explicit assumptions.
