Report evidence and decisions, not activity theatre
Course overview · 4 min reading + 12 min practice, estimated
Principles and method
A client update should explain what was learned, how the market is responding, what progress means and which decisions are needed. Activity counts can provide context but should not substitute for insight. Separate confirmed observations from interpretation. Show constraints and the proposed response early enough for the client to act. Keep candidate details proportionate and appropriately shared. A concise report with a clear recommendation is more useful than a large spreadsheet without a decision. Record client responses so the next update reflects actual agreement.
Worked example
An update reports that relevant candidates consistently ask about shift flexibility and that two search lanes show transferable evidence. It asks the client to decide a working-pattern question rather than simply reporting 200 contacts.
Put it into practice
Write a weekly report with progress, evidence, risks and two decisions needed.
Use fictional information and keep your work in your own notes.
Compare your approach: self-review guidance
Include the source period and sample limits. Each decision should have an owner, deadline and consequence of delay. Avoid disguising low-quality activity as progress.
