Separate essential work from avoidable barriers
Course overview · 4 min reading + 12 min practice, estimated
Principles and method
Review each requirement and process step for its connection to the job. A criterion can be legitimate while the method used to assess it creates an unnecessary barrier. Ask whether equivalent evidence can demonstrate the same capability. Inspect application forms, scheduling, physical access, technology and communication. Inclusion requires attention to ordinary operational details, not only broad statements. UK employers have legal duties concerning discrimination and reasonable adjustments; the precise application depends on circumstances. Use current official guidance and appropriate advice for the jurisdiction. This lesson focuses on a practical review method.
Worked example
A role needs accurate written incident reports, but an application form times out quickly and cannot save drafts. The time limit measures the form’s inconvenience rather than the essential writing capability.
Put it into practice
Audit five steps in a fictional application journey and distinguish essential demands from process barriers.
Use fictional information and keep your work in your own notes.
Compare your approach: self-review guidance
For each barrier, identify the capability actually being assessed and a possible accessible route. Do not remove legitimate job requirements without analysis, and do not defend an unnecessary obstacle simply because it is standard.
