Choose a thesis and a review gate
Course overview · 4 min reading + 12 min practice, estimated
Principles and method
Set criteria for continuing, adapting or abandoning the niche. Use evidence from buyer conversations, talent research and delivery trials. Decide what you can credibly offer now and what requires capability building. A specialism can evolve, but constant switching prevents accumulated knowledge and relationships. Record the decision and review date so short-term disappointment does not automatically trigger another rebrand. Keep a narrow learning agenda for the next period. The aim is a tested business direction, not certainty that the market will always perform.
Worked example
After six weeks, the recruiter finds strong demand but weak credibility in executive search. The decision is to begin with a bounded mapping service and build delivery evidence before promising full retained search.
Put it into practice
Write a one-page niche decision with evidence, risks and a ninety-day validation gate.
Use fictional information and keep your work in your own notes.
Compare your approach: self-review guidance
Include one condition that would make you stop and one capability you must build. Distinguish a promising hypothesis from a proven business model.
