Run financial, quality and risk checks
Course overview · 4 min reading + 12 min practice, estimated
Principles and method
Set a regular review of invoices, expected receipts, costs and cash scenarios with appropriate professional support. Check delivery quality, complaints, data handling and supplier issues alongside sales. A profitable-looking month can conceal overdue payments or excessive unpaid effort. Keep access and backup arrangements current and test recovery using non-sensitive examples. Define what would trigger reduced spending, paused acquisition or additional support. Small businesses need proportionate controls, not the absence of controls. The review should take a manageable amount of time and lead to clear actions.
Worked example
Revenue appears strong, but two invoices are overdue and three searches require more work than planned. The owner reviews cash and capacity before buying another tool or accepting a new commitment.
Put it into practice
Create a weekly control checklist and a monthly downside review.
Use fictional information and keep your work in your own notes.
Compare your approach: self-review guidance
Include cash timing, work in progress, critical defects, access and continuity. Each check should have an action threshold and a record of follow-through.
