Independent Recruiter Operating System · Lesson 2

Connect commercial and delivery records

Course overview · 4 min reading + 12 min practice, estimated

Principles and method

Maintain one coherent view of opportunities, active engagements, candidates, next actions and commitments. Use appropriate systems and stable records so information is not scattered across memory and private notes. Keep commercial stage separate from candidate stage and financial status. Every active item should have an owner, next action and date. A solo owner still benefits from explicit records because context switching creates errors. Automate reminders where useful, but preserve judgement and preference handling. Review overdue work by consequence, not merely by age.

Worked example

A search is commercially agreed but waiting on a client brief. The operating view shows the dependency and next decision, rather than treating the engagement as fully active sourcing work or as cash already received.

Put it into practice

Design a weekly dashboard with six sections and explicit next-action fields.

Use fictional information and keep your work in your own notes.

Compare your approach: self-review guidance

Include sales, delivery, candidate commitments, finance, risks and improvement. Avoid copying every detail into the dashboard; link to the source record and surface the decision needed.
