Responsible AI in Recruitment · Lesson 3

Make oversight and transparency meaningful

Course overview · 4 min reading + 12 min practice, estimated

Principles and method

A human reviewer needs competence, time, source access and authority to disagree. A forced approval click is weak oversight. Explain AI involvement appropriately to affected people and provide a usable route for questions or challenge. The explanation should describe the role of the tool and the accountable human process without inventing technical certainty. Consider how people can participate if the technology creates a barrier. Governance includes training operators to recognise unsupported outputs and escalation conditions. Human involvement does not automatically make a process lawful, fair or accurate.

Worked example

A recruiter receives a ranked list with no underlying evidence and thirty seconds to approve it. The redesign provides criterion evidence, removes automatic rejection and gives the reviewer a genuine escalation route.

Put it into practice

Design a reviewer checklist and a candidate-facing explanation for a fictional assistive tool.

Use fictional information and keep your work in your own notes.

Compare your approach: self-review guidance

The reviewer must be able to stop or change the action. The explanation should identify purpose and contact route. Avoid the claim that a human click eliminates all risk.
