Recruitment Business Development · Lesson 6

Qualify mutual fit before committing capacity

Course overview · 4 min reading + 12 min practice, estimated

Principles and method

Explore role clarity, budget, urgency, authority, process, access and competing approaches. Qualification is a joint decision about whether a search can succeed, not a script for forcing every lead into the pipeline. Identify constraints that make delivery unrealistic and propose changes. Record an agreed next step with an owner and date. A client may have a legitimate need but not be ready for your service. Preserve the relationship by explaining what would need to change rather than promising delivery under conditions you cannot support.

Worked example

A client requests a scarce profile below the confirmed market range and will not meet candidates for six weeks. The recruiter proposes a brief and process review before accepting a rapid shortlist commitment.

Put it into practice

Create a qualification note with confirmed facts, gaps and a go, revise or pause decision.

Use fictional information and keep your work in your own notes.

Compare your approach: self-review guidance

Explain the delivery consequences of each gap. The decision should be based on fit and readiness, not only the attractiveness of the fee.
