Advanced Search and Sourcing Methods · Lesson 1

Translate a brief into searchable concepts

Course overview · 4 min reading + 12 min practice, estimated

Principles and method

Split the brief into concepts such as capability, operating environment, responsibility and location. Create synonym groups for each concept, including local terminology and adjacent titles. Not every concept belongs in the first query. Requiring every preferred term can exclude strong candidates whose profiles are brief. Start with essential concepts and inspect a sample, then add constraints deliberately. Search syntax varies between tools; check the current platform documentation rather than assuming every Boolean operator or wildcard works everywhere. Keep assessment criteria separate from query terms because search is an imperfect retrieval method.

Worked example

A reliability role may appear under maintenance, asset integrity or plant engineering. The query library records these variants and tests whether the resulting work resembles the brief before narrowing by title.

Put it into practice

Build four concept groups and a broad first query for a fictional reliability lead.

Use fictional information and keep your work in your own notes.

Compare your approach: self-review guidance

Use OR within a synonym group and the tool’s supported intersection method between essential groups. Explain why at least one preferred requirement is left out initially. A query is a hypothesis to inspect, not an eligibility rule.
